The full report into a Nazi-style salute that formed the basis of an initiation at North West University will not be released.

Releasing snippets of the report yesterday, the university council said the full report would not be made public as it would lead to litigation and that the council was considering stopping any publication or distribution of it by way of an interdict.

The Higher Education Transformation Network has slammed the university, saying it had "bowed to idle threats of litigation".

Last week, Afriforum's youth wing said a part of the report, which reportedly stated the problem was the large number of white Afrikaners at the institution amounted to "discrimination and hate speech" - and threatened going to the Equality Court should the university not disregard that part of the report .

North West University council's deputy chairman, Itumeleng Pooe, said the task-team found that the Nazi-style salute at the Potchefstroom campus was not driven by Nazi ideals but by practices and traditions from the past.

He said the report also found human rights violations occurred during the reception and induction period, and this would receive urgent attention.
